Sleep deprivation is HARD. For any new mama, seasoned mama, under stress, shift work…whatever the reason. Lack of sleep can be challenging and hard.

WHY SLEEP DEPRIVATION MAKES YOU FAT?

1. Being tired can lead to poor choices. Your brain is not thinking clearly to discern what to eat and what to steer clear from.

2. Make the tiredness stop and try to get more energy. Sleep deprivation can lead to more food and thus more weight gain as you want something to pep you up during the day. Food doesn’t = more energy. Picking insulin spiking foods like high sugar and high carbs can be energy depleting.

3. Lacking sleep can make a person want to numb out when they are awake. As a newborn mama, I was awake, but wanting to sleep. I ate massive food quantities to try to numb out being tired. It didn’t work.

5 Solutions For Sleep Deprivation

1. The most powerful tool I used for sleep deprivation was realizing that lack of sleep was just for a season….not for forever. A season of little children, a season of stress, a season of hormonal changes, a season of work…just for a season and that it is not for forever. Usually, sleep deprivation eventually will stop. Knowing that the tiredness is coming to an end gives hope.

2. If stress is the reason for missing beautiful shut eye, use my Index Card Method. Essentially, the night before put on an index card your priorities of what needs to get done the next day.

3. Get your hormones checked if you are ‘popping awake’ and not able to fall asleep.

4. Use sleep meditations.

5. Ask for help from friends and family. I relied more heavily on family when I had my newborn and toddler. I didn’t know that lack of sleep was still going to be challenging when I had a 2 1/2 year old. I wish I had set better expectations for myself and realized just for a season I needed to do less…not more. Asking for help with some of responsibilities enabled me to get my much needed sleep.
